On Saturday (2/9) evening, April noticed that the baby was moving less than usual. This continued on Sunday so while working on Monday, April stopped by her OBGYN. They monitored the baby, finding a good heart beat but decreased movement, even after drinking a Coke. Dr. Robbins told April things were okay, but she was having the baby on Tuesday via induction. So Daniel rushed home and on Monday night we drove to the hospital. Of course before we left, April had to tidy up a bit.

April and the baby were monitored throughout the night. It's difficult to see in the picture, but there are four lines on the monitor. The top one is our baby's heart rate and movement, and the second one is April's contractions. The bottom two are similar data from a mom and baby next door. Our baby's heart rate was good, but movement was minimal throughout the night. As a result, the nurses and OBGYN on call concluded at about 6:15am that trying to induce would likely cause the baby too much distress. They felt it was time to get him out a different way, and we, with great apprehension, knew they were right.

The next few minutes were a blur as the anesthesiology, surgical, and pediatric teams seem to all appear from nowhere. Since the baby was not in immediate danger, there was time for April to have an epidural rather than general anesthesia for the caesarean. As a result, she was awake throughout and Daniel was able to be with her. Time seemed to stand still as the team had some difficulty getting the baby out. But at 6:58am, we heard a frantic cry. It turned out he had to come this way. The team found that the umbilical cord was small and had wrapped once around the neck.

Since he was not depressed upon coming out, Daniel was able to go with the baby to recovery for a full exam: 6 lb. 15 oz. and 20.25 inches long.

After a thorough exam and a warm bath, the baby was alert and we waited for news on April’s condition.

It seemed like forever until April arrived. Daniel and the baby were relieved to see her.

Once we left the OR recovery area, we moved to a great room and the baby took the opportunity to take a well-deserved nap. Baba and Papa, and Nanny and Pop arrived not long after. The day went well, with April recovering as if nothing had happened. The baby started nursing, pooping, peeing, crying, and sleeping. The five essentials were covered.
